APA Reference List Citation Examples

Creating APA citations for print and ebooks is simple once you understand the format. APA uses the author-date system, which means the author’s last name, first initial and the date of publication are the most important elements of the citation.

BOOK (PRINT) One author

Author, A.A. (2001). Title of work. Location: Publisher.

Last Name of author, Initial first name, Initial middle name (if available). (Year of publication). Book
Location: Publisher.

Note: Title of book is in italics with first word capitalized only.


Subtitles: Format the book title like this:  Book title: Subtitle of this book.


Hindman, M. (2008). The myth of digital democracy. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press.

BOOK (PRINT)  2 or  more authors (up to and including 7 authors)

Creating source citations for books with two or more authors is simple.

Author, A.A., & Author, B.B. (2000). Book title. Location: Publisher.

Author, A.A., Author, B.B., Author, C.C. & Author, D.D. (2000). Book title. Location: Publisher.


Lester, J., & Koehler, W. C. (2003). Fundamentals of information studies: Understanding information and  its environment. New York, NY: Neal-Schuman Publishers.

BOOK (PRINT) 8 or more authors

Include the first 6 authors’ names, insert three ellipsis points, then last author

Author, A.A., Author, B.B., Author, C.C., Author, D.D., Author, E.E., Author, F.F.,…Author, K.K. (2001) Book title. Location: Publisher.

Note: before ellipsis points make sure you put a period after the last initial, then a comma, then three ellipsis points.
